De función defensiva en la Edad Media, por sus barrancos, arroyos, y recinto amurallado, fue hasta el XVII un centro de recogida de aguas en Madrid (punto de reunión de aguadores) y contaba con numerosas fuentes. El espacio fue allanado y transformado hasta la última reforma en 2011.

The Plaza de Isabel II is a historic public square between the Sol and Palacio wards in the central district of Madrid. The plaza is at the convergence of Arenal Street and the minor roads Arrieta, Calle de Campomanes, Caños del Peral, Escalinata and Vergara.
